Some of us had a day trip to the lovely town of Priego de Cordoba, known for its Baroque Churches and wonderful buildings, made possible by a very successful 18thC silk production boom. There is a wonderful fountain, as a monument to this success, which has many pools and 139 spouts, surrounding a statue of Neptune.
We were greeted by the Mayor (who seems incredibly young !) and then embarked upon a walking tour of the town with Aixa, our Guide. The ceiling of Aurora church is OTT but well worth seeing. From this church on Saturdays, cloaked brothers walk around the town singing & collecting alms. The Barrio de la Villa has pretty whitewashed houses with geraniums, leading to the Balcon de Aldarve, with
stunning views over the campo.
We then had a tasty lunch and made our return to Nerja.
The chocolate Belen at Rute is also included.
