Trip to Gorafe – 12 April 2019

===========================================================================
On friday 12th April, more than 30 of us enjoyed our final trip of the season, to Gorafe Megalithic Site.
What an amazing place.

Eleven different civilisations have used the valley as their spiritual resting places, it is quite a site to behold.  The rock formations around, made of sandstone and weathered over centuries, create a stunning backdrop. The air is so clear, the silence is almost deafening apart from the gentle trill of birdsong.  There are over 200 dolmenes in 2 major different styles, each has been numbered and there are suggested walking routes.
Having people of differing walking ability, we chose a fairly easy area to view, together with our Guide Juan.  The more experienced and able went with Sue and Juan and those less able came with me to a flatter, more even terrain, where we enjoyed wonderful views and we saw 4 or 5 dolmenes. Sue and her group saw different dolmenes.  The two groups then joined together for a visit to the aqueduct/acequia which is thousands of years old. It has warm water flowing from 8 thermal springs and, over the years, the height of the aqueduct has increased as the minerals flowing over the sides have built up.
The most disappointing part of the day was the visit to the Interpretation Centre, which had been so full of promise when we undertook the recce. It is very high tec. We saw a 3D video, wearing the special specs and then a show on a globe set in the floor, with mirrors and extra projection – I’m sure the school children all love it !
It wasn’t helped by the centre’s Guide, Rocio’s lack of ability with English.It was so much better when we were there before but I think she also speaks French and had just had a Belgian group before us.
Not to be thwarted, we adjourned for a simple lunch provided by a local, family run restaurant called the Mirador.  We all sat at tables on the terrace and enjoyed the wonderful views whilst having lunch and vino.
We embarked on our return to Nerja, arriving by 18.00.
Some of the group have already told me that they intend to return to site – music to my ears !
