Trip to Montilla – Jan 2023

On Friday 20th January, 36 of us set off to the lovely town of Montilla in the province of Cordoba. We stopped for our usual coffee and toast, which enables the group to get chatting to each other and then continued to Montilla. We were met by our lovely guide Teresa, who was delighted that we were interested to see monuments in the town.
There are many interesting architectural features on former palaces, a wonderful convent with beautiful original painted walls and a mudejar ceiling. We also bought some home-made goodies from the nuns ! We then visited the art gallery of a prolific local artist, Jose Garnelo. The collection has at least 180 of his works and it is particularly interesting to see that his first sketches or treatments for the main paintings are also on display. The town is clean and well maintained.
We boarded the bus again to go to the other end of town for our visit to the oldest Bodega in Andalucia – Bodega Alvear. Here we had a tasting – I don’t have any pics here, I think I was pre-occupied ! And many of us bought bottles from their wine shop. We then had a short walk to a nearby hotel where we enjoyed a 3 course lunch and then boarded the coach for our journey back to Nerja.
Another enjoyable time was had by all.
