On Friday 17th February, 40 of us set off for the province of Granada to the villages of Fuente Vacqueros and Valderrubio, to hear about the birthplace of Frederico Garcia Lorca and the later family home. The houses are now in built up areas but in Lorca’s time, they were surrounded by the countryside which Frederico loved so much. His birth home has many mementos of the family, some of which were donated by Salvador Dali’s sister. Salvador & Frederico were great friends. Because we were such a large group, we divided and whilst one group was in the house, the rest had the opportunity to see a wonderful exhibition of black and white photographs by Adrian Ensor, of views and locations which Frederico loved so much. Adrian had been inspired by Ian Gibson’s biography of Lorca. Also in the gallery, were displayed framed messages from various famous people including Leonard Cohen and Salman Rushdie.
Trip to Lorca’s Houses — Feb 2023
The house in Valderrubio also has many family photo’s and interesting mementos. This house gave him his inspiration for the last play which he wrote “The House of Bernarda Alba”. He finished it in June 1936, just 2 months before he was executed. We visited the actual house too and saw some examples of the performances of his play, which he wrote, having recalled the conversations he overheard as a child, when playing in a well in the garden.
Our guide Juan is very knowledgeable and has a good sense of humour, which helps when having to absorb so much information. We had our usual breakfast en route and after the visits, we all enjoyed a 3 course lunch at a restaurant in a nearby village.
In the distance, was the snow capped Sierra Nevada.
