Trip to El Borge — Jan 2026

On Friday last, 36 members of the Nerja History Group, had a splendid visit to El Borge.  After our breakfast stop, we went straight to the Museo de Bandoleros (Bandit Museum), which was previously exhibited in Ronda. Apparently, the owner retired and so offered the collection to pueblos in Malaga and El Borge was the lucky one !  It is an amazing collection of original artefacts from 17th-19th C.
We also had a surprise visit from one of the villagers, who volunteers to dress in garb of the day. He threatened us all – when he fired the gun, we nearly all had a coronary ! it was good fun though. We then went into the village and had a tasting of 4 local wines. Purchases were made and then a short visit of the village and local church.  The church, as many have found, has frescoes that had been protected by the painting of cal over them, so some have been revealed and some renewed. We then adjourned to the nearby Posada, where, allegedly, the famous bandit of El Borge, El Bizco (the cross eyed man) was born, for our 3 course lunch. The village is also well known for its pasas (raisins), which you can see drying on the racks throughout the countryside.
Despite the rain in the morning, it didn’t dampen our spirits and seemingly, a good time was had by all.
Our next meeting will be on Friday 6th February with a presentation by another favourite guest speaker, Rafa Anderson “Madinat Al Zahra-Last Days at the centre of the World”. There will be a visit to the site on Friday 13th February with Rafa as our guide.
