About us

Ana María Muñoz Valverde
Concejala de Cultura, Educación, Turismo y Residentes seen here with Christina Sinclair of The Nerja History Group at the meeting of 12th January 2024.

The Nerja History Group (NHG) was started in 2002 by Dr Dorothy Price, a former nun, who moved to Spain to retire.  Pursuing her interest in history, she decided to give a few talks in Nerja ‘From Phoenicians to the Euro’.  These were promoted locally and she expected that maybe eight or so people might be interested – about 60 people turned up and the NHG was born.  In those days, local trips would be made by car-sharing but these days, we hire a coach.

Due to Dr Dorothy’s failing health, the group has been run since 2008 by Christina Sinclair with valuable helpers.   Sadly, Dr Dorothy died in 2019.

The group is registered as an “asociación cultural sin ánimo de lucro” (non profit making) and as such, we are self-financing.

We promote ourselves as “enthusiastic amateurs”, all interested to know more about the wonderful Country in which we live or spend our time.  Our guest speakers volunteer to give talks.  Many are retirees who now have the time to indulge their passion for an aspect of Spanish history and some have become regular contributors.

The meetings, with a guest speaker, run between the months of October and April and our meetings are held in the Cultural Centre, C/Granada on a Friday.  Meetings start at 11.00 a.m. There is a 7€ contribution per person requested on entry, to cover costs. The week after the meeting, we usually have a day trip to a place of interest and we now have an annual multi-day trip, further afield in Spain, costs of both are announced at the meetings.

The meetings are open to all and are conducted in the English language.
