The Phoenicians + Portugal and great historical figures

Meeting January 10th 2020

Nearly 100 of us had an enjoyable meeting in memory of our founder Dr Dorothy Price.  Sue Harvey gave a bit of background about how the NHG came about and then gave a short Talk about the Phoenicians.  I know that some of you who knew Dorothy couldn’t be there today and so you may be interested to listen to a Radio programme on TRE (Talk Radio Europe). Earlier this week, Howard Brereton the Presenter on Fridays “In Conversation” from 13.00 – 15.00, interviewed Sue Harvey.  It is possible to listen if you select his programme from 14.00-15.00 today on frequency 105.5 or 88.9 on the Axarquia location.
When the Meeting continued, we had a wonderful Talk by one of our favourite and popular Guest Speaker’s, Geoff Hutt.  His talks are always so well researched and presented, so informative. It was a fascinating account of how Portugal came to be and the various “great men” who aided it’s growth & wealth and then it’s decline. And how different the Iberian Peninsular might have been if the Capital had been moved to Lisbon instead of Madrid.

After the meeting, nearly 50 of us enjoyed a splendid meal at la Ermita where we heard a few reminiscences about Dorothy and David Goodland, another of our favourite Speaker’s, read the poem “The Burial of John Moore” which had been one of Dorothy’s favourites. Jacky from the Foreigners Department also popped in as she knew Dorothy.  She wished us all good luck for the continuation of the Group and told those of us from UK, what we need to do to get our Residencias, in the light of forthcoming Brexit. She invited us to visit her with queries.

Dorothy’s legacy lives on !
