Sayalonga and Bodega Bentomiz – January 2024

January 2024 started with a brilliant presentation about El Cid by a regular and popular contributor, Geoff Hutt.
The following Friday, 25 of us (places were limited) set off to the pretty, small town of Sayalonga, where we had a guided visit. The weather just about stayed dry but then we boarded the bus again for the short journey to Bodega Bentomiz. Our group had last visited in 2010 and the changes and development since then are wonderful to see.
The Bodega building is quite beautiful, nestling comfortably into the countryside, comprising of different coloured panels of slate. The small team who meet, greet, explain and serve are all totally passionate about their award winning wines and sumptuous food. The owners are the same Dutch couple whom I met in 2009 and are still very much in evidence. Andre, a former civil engineer designed and built the building and now also oversees the Menu.  His wife Clara is now an accomplished wine-maker, as is verified by the number of awards which they have gained.
During our visit, the weather changed, we had heavy rain and high winds. What better way to enjoy such a day than to be in the company of like-minded people, enjoying excellent wine and very good food !
